Jesse Fine Faculty Fellowship

Jesse Fine Fellowship

Supporting teaching and research of ethics

The Jesse Fine Fellowship, housed in the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, supports the study of work focused on moral concepts and problems in practical ethics, citizenship, and professional life. Successful course development applicants will receive $5,000; summer research funding proposals will receive $10,000. The fellowship is made possible by a gift from Dorothy Fine to honor the memory of her husband, IU graduate Jesse Fine.

Proposals are invited for the following activities:

  • Designing a new course in the summer that includes ethical questions as a significant organizing theme or proposing a substantial revision to an existing course to include or expand its attention to ethics.
  • Summer funding for research that addresses practical and professional ethics.

Eligibilty

  • Full-time faculty may apply.
  • Courses and research in all fields and schools will be considered, with a focus on units outside the departments of philosophy and religious studies, in line with the wishes of the donor to increase attention to ethics across disciplines.
  • The course must be approved to be offered by the applicant’s home department or school before the end of the following academic year.

Application Process

Applicants must be current members of the IU Bloomington faculty.

The dossier should include:

A project description of about 100 words.

A 1-page letter addressing the following:

  • The basic or organizing ethical questions to be examined in the course or research project
  • For course development proposals, the extent and nature of any revisions to an existing course and the anticipated learning outcomes.
  • For research support, a brief summary of how the funds will move the project forward and how the project will contribute to existing literature

The application should be submitted using the online form. It will then be routed to the chair for approval.
