Poynter Center Fellows Named

Richard Miller, director of the Poynter Center, has named six Indiana University faculty members as Poynter Center Fellows for 2006-07. The topic for the year is "Memory: Ethics, Politics, Aesthetics." The six are: Purnima Bose, an associate professor of English and director of the Cultural Studies Program; Maria Bucur, an associate professor in East European History and acting director of the Russian and East European Institute; Patrick Dove, an assistant professor in the department of Spanish and Portuguese; Joseph Hoffman, IU Bloomington School of Law; John Lucaites, an associate professor of Communication and Culture; and Lynn Struve, a professor in History and East Asian Languages and Culture. The seminar also includes Byron Bangert, Melissa Seymour, and Mark Wilson of the Poynter Center.

Privacy and Technology Seminars begin Sept. 21

Deborah Johnson, the Anne Shirley Carter Olsson Professor of Applied Ethics at the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science, will present the first of four seminars on Privacy and Technology. Her topic is "Using the Internet for Social Science Research." Eden Medina, School of Informatics, will present the response. This series of seminars will address various ethical aspects of "Privacy in Public: Ethics, Privacy and the Technology of Public Surveillance." Each seminar will include a public address by the visiting scholar, followed by commentary by a local campus scholar. The series is supported by a New Frontiers Grant from the Office of the Vice-Provost for Research at Indiana University. The September 21 seminar begins at 3 p.m. in State Room West of the Indiana Memorial Union. More info. . . .

Health Care Ethics Seminar

What ethical responsibility do physicians have when they are involved in state-sponsored interrogations? That's the topic for the first Health Care Ethics Seminar this fall. Join us at the Poynter Center on Thursday, September 28, at 4 p.m. for the discussion, which will be led by Byron Bangert, Research Associate at the Poynter Center. More info. . . .

Undergraduate Research Stipend Applications Due September 29

The Poynter Center offers up to $200 to undergraduates who are doing research in issues of practical ethics in a particular discipline. Students at IU Bloomington who are conducting research in practical ethics for a class or honors project in Fall 2006 or who are planning to do so in Spring 2007 may apply by September 29, 2006, for a research stipend.
