The Indiana University Poynter Center team won the November 10, 2007 regional
and competed February 21, 2008 in the national competition in San Antonio, Texas in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. Three teams from Central States Regional competed in the national event (IU, DePauw University and Wright State University). The IU Poynter Center team did well in the morning rounds, but did not have enought points to advance to the quarterfinals in the evening.

The Ethics Bowl team for 2007-08 was:
- Andrew Hahn, a sophomore majoring in Political Science and Ethics
- Megan Robb, a senior majoring in English and India Studies
- Sam Ross, a senior majoring in Political Science and English
- Neil Shah, a junior majoring in Mathematics, Finance, and Economics
- Emma Young, a senior majoring in Religious Studies
Robert Crouch, a research assistant at the Poynter Center, was the coach and Sandra Shapshay from Philosophy was the faculty sponsor for 2007-08.

Each year the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions sponsors a
team to compete in the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. This year the format expanded to
two rounds. The team reached the quarterfinals of the Ethics Bowl on Feb. 22, 2007, in Cincinnati.
Regional Ethics Bowl Competition

The first round involved teams competing in eight regional competitions across the United States. The IU team competed at Marion College in Indianapolis on November 11, 2006. The team was successful, which meant they continued to the national competition in February. Mark Wilson,
a graduate student in the Department of Religious Studies and a Research Assistant at the
Poynter Center, was this year's coach. Richard Miller, director of the Poynter Center, was the team's advisor.

The 2005-06 IU Ethics Bowl Team participated in the annual intercollegiate competition on March 2, 2006 in Jacksonville, Florida.
The team included Amy Payne, a junior in Psychology; Megan Robb, a sophomore in English, Philosophy, and India Studies; Neil Shah, a freshman in Mathematics, Finance, and Accounting; Laura Williams, a senior in Journalism and Political Science; and Emma Young, a sophomore in Classical Studies and Religious Studies. The coach was Mark Wilson, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Religious Studies. The faculty advisor was Richard Miller, director of the Poynter Center and professor of Religious Studies.

2005 Team
|
The Indiana University Poynter Center Ethics Bowl
Team competed in the Eleventh Intercollegiate Ethics
Bowl February 24, 2005 in San Antonio, Texas, and
reached the semifinals.

The team included five members: Khalil AbuGharbieh,
a sophomore in Political Science, Religious Studies,
and Near Eastern Languages and Culture; James
Bourke, a senior in Philosophy, Political Science,
and an individualized major in Nonviolence in Theory
and Practice; Ryan Funk, a sophomore in Political
Science and Religious Studies and a certificate in
the Liberal Arts and Management Program; Megan Robb,
a freshman in English and India Studies; and Emma
Young, a freshman who is exploring her interests in
History, Linguistics, Classics, and Religious
Studies. The faculty director was Richard B. Miller,
Director of the Poynter Center and Professor of
Religious Studies. The coach was Melissa Seymour, a
doctoral student in Philosophy and a research
assistant at the Poynter Center.

The top eight teams advanced to the quarterfinals. IU defeated Clemson University in the quarterfinal round and lost to Eckerd College of Florida in the semifinal match. The Ethics Bowl was won this year by the team from the University of Washington.

2004 Team Wins Title

The Indiana University Poynter Center Ethics Bowl
Team won the Tenth Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl
February 26, 2004 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The competition
is held each year in conjunction with the Annual
Meeting of the Association for Practical and
Professional Ethics.

the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, an IU

and Near Eastern Languages and Culture; Valerie
Aquila, a senior in Journalism and History; James
Bourke, a junior in Philosophy, Political Science,
and the Individualized Major Program in Nonviolence
in Theory and Practice; Jacob Fulk, a senior in
Religious Studies; Elizabeth Lewis, a senior in
Religious Studies, Philosophy, and Political
Science. The faculty director was Richard B Miller,
Director of the Poynter Center and Professor of
Religious Studies. The coach was Mark A. Wilson, a
doctoral student in Religious Studies.

The IU Poynter Center team defeated Weber State
University in the quarterfinals and University of
Montana in the semifinals. IU defeated Wright State
University in the final round.
2003 Team Places Second
|
The Indiana University Ethics Bowl Team placed second in the
Ninth Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. The competition was held
February 27, 2003 in Charlotte, North Carolina in conjunction
with the Twelfth Annual Meeting of the Association for
Practical and Professional Ethics.

The IU team, which was sponsored by the Poynter Center for
the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, included six
members: Valerie Aquila, a junior in Journalism and History;
James Bourke, a sophomore in Philosophy, Political Science,
and the Individualized Major Program in Nonviolence in Theory
and Practice; Jae Chung, a senior in Philosophy and French;
Jacob Fulk, a junior in Religious Studies; Summer Johnson, a
senior in Philosophy and the Individualized Major Program in
Bioethics; and Betsey Wiegman, a senior majoring in
Philosophy and Germanic Studies. The faculty director was
David H. Smith, Director of the Poynter Center and Professor
of Religious Studies. The coach was Mark A. Wilson, a
graduate student in Religious Studies.

The Kelley School of Business at IU Bloomington also fielded
a team. Members included: Katherine Beyer, a junior in
Political Science, Religious Studies, and the Liberal Arts
& Management Program; Mark Ishu, a senior with majors in
Marketing, Philosophy, and International Studies; Vassilis
Kontos, a senior with majors in Finance and International
Studies; and Jonathan Zarich, a junior with majors in
Economics, Political Science, and the Liberal Arts and
Management Program. The coach/sponsor was Carolyn Wiethoff, a
Clinical Assistant Professor of Management in the Kelley
School of Business.
The IU Poynter Center team defeated St. Louis University in
the quarterfinals and the Air Force Academy in the
semifinals. The Naval Academy won in the final round.
2002 Team
The 2002 Poynter Center team included Kathryn Bryan, Jae
Chung, Jacob Fulk, Brian Holman, Summer Johnson, and
Elizabeth Wiegman. Julia Pedroni was the coach. The faculty
advisor was David H. Smith, Director of the Poynter Center
and Professor of Religious Studies.
2001 Team
The 2001 Poynter Center team included Erin Brown, Maria
Cohen, Laura Hartman, Summer Johnson, and Diego Merino. The
coach was Julia Pedroni, with David H. Smith as the faculty
director.
